उत्सन्नकुलधर्माणां मनुष्याणां जनार्दन । नरकेऽनियतं वासो भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुम ॥ ४४ ॥
utsanna-kula-dharmāṇāṁ manuṣhyāṇāṁ janārdana narake ‘niyataṁ vāso bhavatītyanuśhuśhruma
Translation
We have heard, O Janardan, that people whose family traditions are destroyed live in hell for an indefinite time.

हे जनार्दन! हमने सुना है कि जिनके कुलधर्म नष्ट हो जाते हैं, उन मनुष्यों का अनिश्चित काल तक नरक में वास होता है।
Commentary
"We have heard" (anuśhuśhruma) — Arjun appeals to tradition, to what the learned have taught. It shows he is not simply afraid; he is trying to act rightly by the knowledge he has. The Gita's answer will be that his knowledge is incomplete, not that his conscience is wrong.
