Who Shri Shani Dev is

Shani is the deity of the planet Saturn, one of the Navagraha (nine celestial bodies) in Hindu astrology. He's the son of Surya, the sun god, and Chhaya ("shadow"), and is widely regarded as the most feared yet most just of the Navagraha — not because he's malevolent, but because he's scrupulously impartial, giving each person exactly the results their own karma has earned, regardless of status or wealth.

Why he's feared — and misunderstood

Shani is associated with hardship periods like Sade Sati (a roughly seven-and-a-half-year cycle) and Dhaiya, which can bring difficulty, delay and reckoning. Tradition frames this not as punishment but as karmic accounting come due — and importantly, sincere devotion, honesty and good conduct are considered to soften even a difficult Shani period considerably.

Iconography and associations

He's shown dark-complexioned, often riding a crow or vulture, holding a sword, arrows or a trident. His day is Saturday (Shanivar), and he's traditionally offered mustard oil, black sesame seeds, iron and black cloth.

The Hanuman connection

Devotion to Hanuman is one of the most widely recommended ways to ease Shani's harsher effects — reciting the Hanuman Chalisa is a common practice during a difficult Shani period, alongside Shani's own Chalisa, Aarti and mantras.
