Frequently asked questions
Why does the Panchang change with the city?
A Hindu day runs from one sunrise to the next, and sunrise in Guwahati comes more than an hour before sunrise in Ahmedabad. Every sunrise-based element — the tithi in force at sunrise, Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya, Abhijit Muhurat — shifts with it, so a city's own Panchang can differ from Delhi's by a tithi on some days.
Which tithi is used for a fast or festival?
Most vrats follow the udaya tithi — the tithi in force at sunrise — which is the one shown on each calendar day. Some observances need the tithi at a particular time instead: Karwa Chauth and Sankashti need Chaturthi at moonrise, Diwali needs Amavasya in the evening (Pradosh), and Janmashtami looks at midnight. That is why a vrat date can differ from the sunrise tithi.
What is the difference between Purnimanta and Amanta months?
North India (Purnimanta) ends each month on Purnima; Gujarat, Maharashtra and most of South India (Amanta) end it on Amavasya. During Shukla Paksha both agree, but in Krishna Paksha the North Indian month is already one ahead — the same day can be Kartik Krishna in Delhi and Ashwin Krishna in Pune. Both names are shown so you can match your family's calendar.
Why does a tithi sometimes say "full night"?
It means the tithi, nakshatra or yoga is still running at the next sunrise, so it lasts the whole Panchang day. A tithi averages a little under 24 hours, but it can be as short as about 20 or as long as about 27, so one sometimes spans two sunrises (and is repeated) or none (and is skipped — a kshaya tithi).
Should I avoid Rahu Kaal for everything?
Rahu Kaal is avoided for beginning something new — a journey, a purchase, a business deal, a puja with a specific wish. Work already under way, routine chores and regular daily worship carry on as usual. Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal are treated the same way, though less strictly.
How accurate are these timings?
Everything is calculated astronomically for the chosen city (Lahiri ayanamsa, sunrise at the upper limb of the Sun), so times generally agree with printed Panchangs to within a minute or two. Printed almanacs from different traditions can still differ by a few minutes, and on the occasional festival a local tradition chooses a different day — follow your family priest or temple when they differ.
